Happy International Women’s Day!!
I remember one time walking down the road to go somewhere, a lady passed me and as she walked on, her heel broke. I stopped beside her, nothing much I could do really, but I stopped anyway. She huffed in frustration and said ‘stupid shoes’, we both laughed together in understanding. I might never meet her again but in that moment, we shared what I call – a little pocket of sisterhood.
Last Saturday I went to the market, I was already tired but I had to. As I got to my customer’s stall, I sat down with an exaggerated sigh of relief. She looked at me in understanding and said “well-done” with a sympathetic smile. I smiled back ruefully. Another pocket of sisterhood.
I remember a pregnant woman, when I was doing my antenatal, sitting beside another woman who had just had a miscarriage, not talking, just holding her. Two strangers creating a pocket of sisterhood.
One thing I’ve discovered with us women – we are never strangers!
We connect on a level of understanding and shared experiences that is so unique to our gender that it unites us even if we had never met before that moment.
So today as you go out, no matter your faith, your beliefs, your race, your political leanings, reach out to a fellow woman and light up the world with little pockets of sisterhood. Let women everywhere know they are not alone. We stand together. The very things meant to tear us apart are the very things that unify us.
On this International Women’s Day, let every woman stand tall in the power that is us, in the magic that is us, in the uniqueness that is us, in the light that is us, in the womanity that is us.
We are Women! Let the world hear us roar!
Happy Women’s Day, sisters!
